No outing is guaranteed to be free of unexpected emergencies.  Hike/Climb leaders are all volunteers; they do not have medical training.  Hikers finding themselves in an emergency situation must usually pull together and improvise to get themselves out of their situation as safely as possible. Cell phone coverage is never guaranteed, but reception can sometimes be enhanced by finding high ground. If a Search and Rescue situation has arisen the New Mexico State Police are the proper people to contact. If their number is not known, dial 911, state that you are in a Search and Rescue situation and ask to be put through to the proper State Police District for your location.
